Course Location

Classes are held at the Hyannis Center of Cape Cod Community College, 540 Main Street, Hyannis. Directions: from Main Street in Hyannis – 2 blocks after the light at High School Road, turn right into parking lot at 540 Main Street. Look for the CCCC sign on the left at the end of the row of storefronts.  From North St. which runs parallel  to Main St. look for the parking lot across the street from Burger King.  There is ample parking.

About Our Courses

Our courses are conducted on Tuesdays and Thursdays with most of the courses being an hour and a half in length except that most courses lasting only one session are three hours long. Exceptions are noted in the course description. Some courses have an additional charge for documentation.

Costs

The basic fee per hour is $5.00 (with some exceptions). The fee for a particular course depends on the number of sessions. Most  multi-session courses are 1 1/2 hours per session. A four session course, for example, would be 6 hours. People who join Computers for Seniors ($25 per year/$100 for a Lifetime membership) receive a discount on all of the courses offered.

Tuesday Lab Session

On Tuesdays from 1:00 to 2:30 pm we have a FREE lab session where members and non-members enrolled in courses can use the computer facilities at the CCCC Hyannis campus. An aide will be present who will provide help for anyone that requests it.  Signup is necessary on the sheet located in the CFS classroom.

Tutorial Sessions

We offer one-on-one customized tutorial sessions in the CFS classroom or offices. You will define your topic(s) when registering and we will call you to set up a convenient time. No requirements. Sessions are 1½ hours in length and cost $40 for members and $55 for others.

Explore Computer Possibilities

This is a one session (3 hours) FREE course designed for those people who may not have a computer but are interested is seeing what capabilities exist.  Here we demonstrate the possibilities that exist with computer software and the potential of the Internet.

Buying a Computer

The array of computer equipment that one can purchase is staggering. In this one session (3 hours) course you will explore what equipment is appropriate as you contemplate either purchasing a computer or upgrading your current computer.

Using WebTV

This one session (3 hours) course gives you all the information you need to understand how to use WebTV.  This is an inexpensive way for you to surf the web and send e-mail messages utilizing your TV as a screen.

Get to Know Your Computer

This six session course (1 1/2 hours per session, a total of 9 hours) is a beginning course that introduces the many uses of the keyboard and its wonderful editing capabilities. You will learn to make corrections and changes in your writings so much more easily and efficiently than a typewriter ever could. You will get practice in writing many different kinds of documents and saving them with a file name either on your computer or onto a disk and re-opening that file for future reference. You will become a master with the mouse via some good “mouse practice” games and you will  learn to drag, and cut, and copy, and paste and find how useful those skills can be.  You will enjoy it and have fun! Introduction to Windows  XP

This seven session (10½ hours) course introduces you to the heart of the computer, the operating system. Microsoft’s Windows is the most predominant operating system around. You will learn the different version of the operating system and learn how to create documents and folders, work with files and set up your desktop. This course requires that you be familiar with the computer keyboard and how to operate the mouse. Documentation provided.

The following courses require that you have a basic understanding of the Windows operating system and know how to use the mouse and keyboard.

Desktop and File Management

This four session (6 hours) course adds to the knowledge gained in the Introduction course. Here you will learn how to use Windows Explorer, to drag and drop files, to copy and paste and the basics of desktop management. You will also learn how to perform basic maintenance tasks. Documentation provided.

Exploring the Internet

This four session (6 hours) course shows you how to use the Internet and the World Wide Web. You learn all about computer addresses, the capabilities of the Internet Explorer browser and how to use search engines to explore the more than two billion web sites that exist. You must have a connection to the Internet to take this course. Documentation provided.

Photoshop for the Web

This 4 session (6 hours) course will show you how to use Photoshop to make and enhance graphics for your web site.  Learn Photoshop basics to make menu buttons and prepare photos for the web.

Working with Word Processing

This seven session (10.5 hours) course will give you fundamental knowledge on creating documents, inserting pictures or tables within your document and  merging a letter with a corresponding address. This instruction uses Microsoft Word.

Spreadsheets and Excel

This four session (6 hours) course teaches you how to set up basic spreadsheets. Learn basic terms, task bar use, cell manipulation, data entry and how to create simple formulas. You will construct practical spreadsheets for managing your checkbook, setting up a budget and establishing charts from the spreadsheet data.

The following courses focus on specific topics and software and require a good working knowledge of Windows

Introduction to Digital Imaging Processing

This 7 session (10.5 hours) course will address the generation of digital images, cropping, resizing, cutting objects from a photograph, cloning, creating collages and panoramic pictures and paper selection. The course is built around "Picture It" software.

Introduction to PowerPoint, This (7.5 hours) presentation organizing software program allows you to create professional looking demonstrations on your personal computer. This five session course teaches you how to set up basic PowerPoint presentations, how to use specific toolbars, how to create and manipulate slides, how to use text, animations, charts, artwork, photos, and sounds, and how to adapt and edit shows to make an entertaining and informative and presentation. This course is for experienced computer users who have a version of PowerPoint installed on their computers or have ready access to one so equipped.

Quicken Survey

This 6 session (9 hours) course is an introduction to the Quicken software. With this financial software you can balance your checkbook, track investments, establish a budget and gather data for tax preparation.

Using a Scanner

This one session (3 hours) course will give you an understanding for what a scanner can do and how to use one effectively. You will learn what to look for when purchasing a scanner as well as learn about Optical Character Recognition.

Computer Maintenance and Security  

This one session (3 hours) workshop will show you how to keep your operating system updated, back up address book and favorites, perform automatic disc defragmentation, scheduling maintenance tasks. Also included are free programs to prevents spyware and sites to test your computer security. Includes Disc with take home instructions.

Googling and Beyond

This is a 3 session (1 1/2 hours) course. Learn the best way to use the popular search engine Google as well as taking a look at other search engines that have become popular. Learn search techniques and find out about other web resources.

Basic Enhancements to Digital Photos

This course will be a two session course (1 ½ hrs per session), a total of  3 hours). You have your photo, now you wish to “fix it”. Just like a professional, you’ll learn to enhance your photo by: Lightening or Darkening, Cropping, Remove scratches, Modify backgrounds,

Eliminate portions and more.
